Woman Sees A Stray Cat Waiting Outside Her House

September 4, 2025, was just like any other day for Eleanor until she looked outside that evening and saw a black-and-white tomcat sitting on the other side of her glass sliding door.

She’d seen the cat hanging around with two kittens she’d rescued when she first moved to her house earlier that year. Something about him seemed familiar — beyond his ties to her kittens — but she couldn’t quite place it.

When she went to feed the cat, who’d always been skittish when hanging out with the kittens, his reaction stunned her.

“He let me open the door and put the can of food in front of him,” Eleanor told The Dodo. “I shut the door slowly to let him eat in peace, he finished the can, and then he just … stayed there.”

“I went back, offered him a bowl of kibble and made my first attempt to pet him. He didn’t get scared at all and let me pet him,” Eleanor said. “After a few bites, he lifted his head up, rubbed his face against my hand and tried to push his way inside my home.”

The cat was insistent on entering the house, as if he belonged there. To keep her little ones safe, Eleanor left the tomcat outside with a fresh bowl of water and food before heading to bed. She assumed that he’d be gone by morning.

“He didn’t leave,” Eleanor said. “I woke up the next morning, and he was still there.”

The tomcat hung around the rest of the day until Eleanor finally scooped him up and took him to the vet. Sadly, he was infested with fleas and FIV positive. With his chances of finding an adoptive home dwindling, Eleanor and her partner made a tearful decision to keep him.

A few weeks after adopting the cat, whom they named Hank, Eleanor was scrolling through her camera roll when she suddenly saw a familiar face from years ago. Her jaw dropped when she realized she’d met Hank back in 2023.

In January 2023, while living in another apartment up the road, a random black-and-white tomcat appeared at Eleanor’s back door looking for food. Every time she attempted to feed him, however, he’d run away. The only evidence she had of his visits was a video she recorded on her phone.

“I came across the video of the fluffy black-and-white cat from my prior apartment. It took me a while to even realize it was Hank at first, but after comparing the markings, I realized it was absolutely him back when he had his fur!” Eleanor said. “I immediately showed the videos and photos to my partner, and we were both just blown away!!”
