Last Fall, Royalty Auto Service owner Sherwood Cooke Jr. received a call for help from a local dealership that he initially thought was a prank. The seasoned mechanic deals with car troubles every day, but this Mercedes-Benz had a very different issue.
“[While] test driving it, they said they heard a cat,” Cooke’s son, Sherwood III, said to him in a TikTok. “I’m dead serious.”

As he neared the car, Cooke began to doubt the claims. He was listening out for the loud cries they’d reported, but he couldn’t hear a thing.
“You would hear a cat if [she] was in there,” Cooke said.
Seconds later, he heard the same cry for help that the others had mentioned.
“Oh, you are in here,” Cooke said to the cat. “I do see you, and you’re in a bad spot. Oh, thank you for letting me hear you.”
The mechanic shone a light into the Mercedes-Benz’s engine bay and discovered a tiny, gray face staring back at him. The kitten hissed at the sight of two grown men, but they didn’t take it personally.
“I’d be scared, too,” Cooke said.
The kitten was trapped in a tight spot underneath the car’s hood, nearly impossible to reach from above. So, Cooke and his son pushed the car into the garage and lifted it above their heads to pull her out from the car’s undercarriage.
Without being able to see, Cooke shoved his arm into the car’s undercarriage and began feeling around for the kitten, all while showering her with gentle words of encouragement. He squeezed his hand through the tight crevices for a few minutes before, finally, he got a grasp of the little kitten.
Cooke gently pulled on the kitten until he was able to slip her out from her hiding place. A few moments later, the dedicated mechanic had the kitten safely in his arms, and he instantly fell in love with her.
“Look at how pretty you are,” Cooke said to the kitten after rescuing her. “[A] shop cat in the making.”
