Minnow is a sweet cat who was found dodging cars on the busy streets of Los Angeles last year. Her rescuer took her home to foster her and brought her to an event at Tail Town Cats in Pasadena in December, where Minnow found her forever family.
“She was immediately friendly and wanted pets, and she was wearing a Christmas bow collar,” Victoria Ng, Minnow’s mom, told The Dodo. “Adopting her was the best Christmas gift of our lives.”
From the moment Minnow arrived home, she proved to be an absolute angel. She adjusted to life inside incredibly well, but knowing she’d been a street cat, her mom couldn’t help but wonder if she missed her life outside at all.
After seeing another TikTok creator buy a concrete slab for their cat, Ng decided she had to try it out with Minnow. She wasn’t sure how Minnow would react, and she came over to investigate the concrete right away.
“Minnow was very curious at first and started by sniffing it,” Ng said. “Then, she immediately rolled and wiggled all over the concrete slab. She loved brushing against the slab and the sharp corners. She also tried to gently nibble it!”

Now, Minnow uses her concrete slab all the time. She likes to sit on it while her parents do chores around the house, and uses it as a kind of home base for herself. The trend of buying concrete for cats has recently gained a lot of traction, and Ng has loved seeing how other cats besides Minnow have reacted to their own slabs.
“The other cats seem to love their concrete slabs too,” Ng said. “People have been very creative with it. For example, I have seen creators put the slab in the sunlight so it can warm up for their cats. I love that cat owners will go above and beyond to make their cats happy.”
Is the concrete actually reminding these cats of when they used to live outside? According to Dr. Annie, a pet behaviorist who shares her insights on TikTok, there are several reasons why cats are loving the concrete.
